Literature is just one of the disciplines of the humanities that serves as a way to express stories and untold experiences to others. It is another form of language that depicts a scene in your head as if you were living in that very moment. Literature can be described as poems, novels, and even short stories. Without having to think much on topic, as soon as we think of or hear of the word literature, we automatically think of the classics such as any works of Shakespeare. According to the text, “This chapter addresses itself to literature of the past and present which springs from the soul of human beings and through which we come to understand ourselves and others with whom we share the amazing condition of being alive.”(69.4.8) Literature is used as a way to identity or define the author or others by using a sophisticated sequence of rhyme, large vocabulary, and intricate use of words that are used to make effective statements in any written piece.

Genres like epics and other early masterpieces emerged and the culture started to form. As stated, “The absence of written languages is a most important point to remember about much early literature.” (71.4.6) This refers back to how symbolism played a key role in early literature when there weren’t exact words that meant certain things, but instead they had cuneiform. Although they had some form of creating literature, I’m guessing the random symbols on clay slabs weren’t cutting it because it took them more than two thousand years to make any major impact in the literary world. For example, the Iliad is one of those epics that in my opinion was one of those steppingstones towards literature becoming the norm. As stated, other than being known as the first major piece of literature in western culture, it was also known for its “humanization of its major characters… Humanization in this sense explains what makes certain literary characters stand apart from others.” (73.4.2/3) One of the most interesting and fascinating things I found out about poets is how they have the ability to stay within the guidelines of different type of schemes, but yet still be able to allow their freedom of thought take course in writing masterpieces. I feel as if the modernism of poetry is dying out on us at an alarming rate. It has basically become a silent language because of all of its other competitors of different types of media and only those that actually care enough to read and study them will be able to indulge in the works of literature.
